Re: show banter
Some favorite moments of banter suggested by folks here back in 2008, when the same question was asked:
Jerry's line at end of the technically plagued Bellarmine College Dec. 7, 1968 show: "Thanks a lot, you have just been victimized by the Grateful Dead!".
They're standing around tuning up, and in the background you hear some guy yell out "ALLIGATOR!," within seconds Pigpen comes up with, "Don't be hollerin' no emergency warnings in a place like this. An alligator loose in here could chomp off a bunch of feet, especially yours, buddy."
Phil's loving intro for Pig "The dog suckingest man in show business."
Also Dec. 28, 1969: prior to hard to handle they begin telling people to move up closer. Pig: "as long as you don't mess with the wires or towers things are going to be fine..." Phil: "hey, your lens cap is on, you" and then one song later at the beginning of mason's Pig has to tell people to move back... "If those things fall down it is going to be trouble city for ya...so you can either stay or move back but if you stay you might get smashed..."
1970: PigPen on Bears Choice: "Let me make my mistakes on my own. I don't need your help"
Pig Pen at SUNY 1970 to a local p.a. guy: Fix the monitors "or I'll rip off your head and shit in it."
(Fillmore West - June 5 1970) Bob: We got a case of broken strings. That isn't to say that we've got a whole case full of broken strings, but we got a case of ... case of...things like that. Anyway, we've got a broken string. So we're going to FIX it! And you can watch our dust."
"We need you to act like a mature responsible audience" (5/2/70)
The 7/14/70 show is funny too when they heap all kinds of abuse on Owsley during some technical problems between songs. Jerry says to Bear "you'd think after 5 years you'd have an ear" to which Bobby replies "trouble is that you'd think that!" In the background at one point Bear is heard saying "well I've got a vague whatever" and Jerry says to the audience, "There it is, a vague whatever!" Bobby says "how can ya hate a guy like that?"
The first night at the Hollywood Palladium in August 71, right before El Paso, PigPen introduces Bobby as "..the prettiest and most compassionate man in show business, Mr. Candy Weir"
Garcia from the stage: 'Right now we're missing King Kong versus Godzilla... I didn't get to see King Kong, but Godzilla, he was one motherfucker.'
8/27/72: During the announcement that the kiddies in the tent are crying for their mommies and daddies. As the guy starts to explain what the kiddy tent is, Bob interrupts with "If you don't know about it, you don't want to know about it." Also, "We're gonna change our name to the Sunstroke Serenaders"
Also 8/27/72: It was extremely hot, and after promising everyone to spray them down from the truck, no truck ever appeared. After GSET they announce "I got one story to tell ya before we go any further - the mystery of the vanishing truck - or what happened to the guy that was gonna spray the crowd - well it turns out the truck they were using is used to drain the shitters. And we weren't gonna have it be said that you got shit sprayed on you at the concert".
Oct. 23, 1973: During Casey Jones the band gets pissed when security guards harrass the fans down front. In the middle of the song someone yells, "Knock it off!" and a few moments later Phil stops playing and shouts, "Okay okay okay asshole, okay asshole, okay asshole, that's it for you, you're through." They start up again, but after a few more seconds someone shouts, "Hey don't beat on our audience, guy!" Kreutzman is said by one reviewer here to have jumped out from behind his kit mid-song to tackle an overzealous security guard. Bobby jumps in with, "Quit throwing punches... Everybody quit throwing punches and we'll start playin again." After a few seconds Jerry threatens to end the show altogether and urges calm: "Cool it out here in front... Back down in front, don't yell at each other... Lighten up." Bobby says, "It's real simple -- would you like to hear music or do you want to get punched?" Phil contributes, "It's real simple. Don't cross the barrier and you won't get punched." Eventually things settle down and they break into One More Saturday Night
Bobby tells a guy not to climb the fence "cuz it's gonna cut ya", then when the guy does anyway and complains, bob sez "well don't climb the fence then idiot!"
12/08/73: track 16 is a six-minute-long tuning session during which Phil and Bob try to get everyone out of the aisles and back into their seats, because the authorities won't let the music go on with the aisles blocked.
5/13/77 Chicago Aud: before Samson, Bobby sez something along the lines of, "Mickey wanted me to tell y'all... I don't really understand it... but he wanted me to tell you that the first rule of Rock and Roll is -- Drummers don't make house calls. (pause while the crowd tries to make sense of this) then Bob sez: "I don't get it, either."
Phil starting the Boise show in '82 with "Citizens of Boise--submit or perish, you are a conquered people!",
The whole band yelling at the guy at SPAC in 1985 climbing the tower to get back in his seat cuz there's 50,000 people waiting for him to do so.
